Connecting to ResNet

UPDATE: 5th March 2009 - By request of LITSS, ResNet SSIDs will be upgraded from WEP to WPA2. Refer to the table below for current status of upgrades. Pre-2003 machines may not support WPA, please contact your LITSS if you think you are affected. Note that the connection process is the same for both methods.

What Is It?

ResNet is a loose term for the networking service provided to ANU Halls & Colleges.

As of Jan 19 2009, wireless in residences is simply an extension of the wired service. Once you associate to the wireless network, the wireless network behaves exactly as it would from the wired port in your room. Student residents have full access to ANU resources, and may access off-campus resources via the StarNet system. The StarNet system is administered by University Accommodation Services (UAS). This pages deals with connecting to the various wireless network in Halls & Colleges, collectively part of ResNet.

What Do I Need?

  • You will need your Hall or Colleges' WEP key to connect. This is obtained from your local IT support staff or college administration.
  • To access off-campus resources (e.g. general web browsing) you will need a Starnet account.

Hardware

Laptop, PDA or portable computing device with either:

  • Built-in 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability, or..
  • A plug-in 802.11b/g wireless card (eg. PCMCIA, Firewire or USB)

Software

  • Wireless drivers for your operating system - usually already installed
  • Your wireless network connection should be configured to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically (known as DHCP)
  • We strongly recommend that you enable your operating system's firewall and use up-to-date Anti-Virus software (e.g. Sophos).

Network to Connect To

  • Your wireless-capable device must be in range of your college wireless network.
  • Wireless coverage is only provided in College common areas, where that College Administration has opted for wireless coverage.
  • Coverage is not provided to students' rooms. Network access in rooms is covered by wired ports.

How Do I Connect?

1 - Confirm wireless network port is active

Make sure that your wireless networking is activated on your laptop.

2 - Associate to a Wireless Access Point

Most operating systems will display a graphical window which allows you to select your college SSID with your mouse.

Residence SSID Security
Bruce Hall "Bruce" WEP
Burgmann College "Burgmann" WEP
Burton & Garran "B&G" WEP
Fenner Hall "Fenner" WPA2
Graduate House "GradHouse" WEP
John XXIII "JohnXXIII" WEP
Toad Hall "Toad" WEP
Ursula College "Ursula" WEP
UniLodge "Unilodge" WPA2
Kinlock (UniLodge 2) "Kinloch" WPA2

If you are unsure, refer to your operating system's documentation for how to view and select an available wireless network to associate to, or AskANU.

3 - Enter the WEP key

ResNet uses WEP authentication.

Your operating system should now prompt you to enter a the WEP key, or passphrase. This is obtained from your LITSS or college administration.
If your login is successful, you should see some indication such as "Connected" or "Acquiring Network Address".

If you have problem browsing, try turning off any web proxy settings in your browser.

What Can I Do?

Once you have logged in, you will automatically have on-campus network access, and off-campus network access via the StarNet system. Details about this are linked on the Wireless Page, however the following pages may be of use:

What Does It Cost?

The StarNet system tracks off-net usage, and charges students based on the amount of traffic downloaded. NetComms and the Division of Information do not set the charge, this is done by UAS or individual Colleges. Consult your College administration for information on traffic charges.

How do I log off?

It is not strictly necessary to log out of the wireless network. You will be automatically logged out after a certain period of inactivity.
