What Is It?

Eduroam is a global co-operative that allows academics visting other institutions to access that institution's wireless network using their home university login.

This page describes how ANU staff and students can configure and connect to the eduroam service when at another eduroam institution.

Academic visitors should refer to their home institution for how to configure eduroam. For general information about eduroam at ANU click here.

What Do I Need?

  • You will need a university or affiliate account (known as Uni ID) to use Eduroam

Hardware

Laptop, PDA or portable computing device with either:

  • Built-in 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability, or a plug-in wireless card (eg. PCMCIA, Firewire or USB) supporting one or more of these standards
  • Hardware that supports both WPA2 and AES
  • Optionally, hardware that also supports 802.11n for higher speeds
If unsure about what your device supports refer to your hardware documentation. Also check OS Support for your system.

Software

  • Wireless software that supports 802.1x authentication (PEAPv1 with EAP-GTC). This will be either built into your operating system, pre-packaged with the Windows installer OR you will be required install a supplicant. See the OS Support page
  • Your wireless network connection should be configured to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically (i.e. DHCP)
  • We strongly recommend that you enable your operating system's firewall and use up-to-date Anti-Virus software (e.g. Sophos). Read the Security Recommendations

Network to Connect To

  • You must within range of an eduroam wireless network at a participating institution.

How Do I Connect?

In general setting up a connection for eduroam is very similar to connecting to ANU-Secure. The key difference is eduroam require you to enter your domain, that is 'user@anu.edu.au'. Also you will not connect to eduroam at the ANU campus, only when off-campus at another institution.

Please refer to the specific connection guide for your operating system:

Windows users should follow the appropriate ANU-Secure configuration guide which also configures eduroam:

What Can I Do?

This wholly depends upon the remote institutions network access policies. Please be aware you are subject to that institution's acceptable use policies whilst using eduroam.

How do I log off?

It is not strictly necessary to log out of any eduroam wireless network. You will be automatically logged out after a certain period of inactivity.
