Linux Connection Guide


Notes for Linux


1 - Gnome's Network Manager does not support ANU-Secure. This is a standard tool on many distributions.

2 - An alternative network manager that does support ANU-Secure is WICD.

3 - To get WICD working you will need to uninstall Network Manager. Follow the Ubuntu guide below for general instructions

4 - Linux is not a supported operating system. See the OS Support matrix

    Installing

  1. Open the Synaptic Package Manager
  2. Search for and install WICD
  3. Reboot

  4. Connecting

  5. Open WICD from the panel
  6. Configure ANU-Secure
  7. Connect

1 - Open the Synaptic Package Manager in System -> Administration

Using Synaptic is recommended as it will manage conflicts and prompt you to uninstall Network Manager


2 - Search for and Install WICD

Enter 'wicd' in the quick search box and click search.


Double-click wicd to mark for installation, then click the Apply button.


Answer yes to uninstalling the conflicting packages related to Network Manager


3 - Reboot

You will be prompted to reboot to Gnome can start using WICD instead of Network Manager to manager connections.


4 - Open WICD from the panel

It will appear in the upper-right section of the panel. The icon is slightly different to that of Network Manager. You should see a list of available networks. Click on the drop-down arrow next to an ANU-Secure network to proceed. You may see muliple occurences of ANU-Secure if you in range of multiple wireless access points - picking any one of these is fine.

5 - Configure ANU-Secure

Click on Advanced Settings in the drop-down area. In the Advanced Settings window make sure it looks like this.

Your identity is your Uni ID without the domain anu.edu.au added. For example u4311234, not u4311234@anu.edu.au

Click OK to save these settings


6 - Connect

Now click on Connect in the main WICD window to begin the connection process. If you connected successfully the Connect button will change to Disconnect.
