Connecting to ANU-Secure


UPDATE: 28th September 2009 - Installing ANU-Secure is now much simpler. We have released a pre-packaged installer. As a result the old supplicant install and configuration guides have been removed and all required steps are in the relevant configuration guide for your operating system.

UPDATE: 30th September 2009 - Windows 7 is now supported and a Linux Install Guide is now available

What Is It?


ANU-Secure is the university's next-generation wireless service. You can read more about it here. This pages deals with connecting to ANU-Secure.


What Do I Need?


Login

  • You will need a university or affiliate account (known as Uni ID) to use ANU-Secure
  • Non-ANU users should visit the Guests page to read about Guest access


Hardware


Laptop, PDA or portable computing device with either:

  • Built-in 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability, or a plug-in wireless card (eg. PCMCIA, Firewire or USB) supporting one or more of these standards
  • Hardware that supports both WPA2 and AES
  • Optionally, hardware that also supports 802.11n for higher speeds
If unsure about what your device supports refer to your hardware documentation. Also check OS Support for your system.


Software

  • Wireless software that supports 802.1x authentication (PEAPv1 with EAP-GTC). This will be either built into your operating system, pre-packaged with the Windows installer OR you will be required install a supplicant. See the OS Support page
  • Your wireless network connection should be configured to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically (i.e. DHCP)
  • We strongly recommend that you enable your operating system's firewall and use up-to-date Anti-Virus software (e.g. Sophos). Read the Security Recommendations


Network to Connect To

  • Your wireless-capable device must be in range of the ANU-Secure wireless network.
  • Wireless coverage is constantly being improved around the campus but is generally well-covered in and around libraries and lecture theatres.

What Can I Do?


Once you have logged in, you will be able to access a set of network services depending on your affiliation (staff or student).

How do I log off?


It is not strictly necessary to log out of the ANU-Secure wireless network. You will be automatically logged out after a certain period of inactivity.
