Contents

What Is It?

ANU-Access is the university's legacy wireless service. You can read more about it here. This pages deals with connecting to ANU-Access.

What Do I Need?

  • You will generally need a university or affiliate account (known as Uni ID) to use ANU-Access
  • Non-ANU users should visit the Guests page to read about Guest access

Hardware

Laptop, PDA or portable computing device with either:

  • Built-in 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability, or a plug-in wireless card (eg. PCMCIA, Firewire or USB) supporting one or more of these standards
If unsure about what your device supports refer to your hardware documentation. Also check OS Support for your system.

Software

  • Wireless drivers for your operating system - usually already installed
  • Your wireless network connection should be configured to obtain an IP address and DNS server address automatically (known as DHCP)
  • We strongly recommend that you enable your operating system's firewall and use up-to-date Anti-Virus software (e.g. Sophos). Read the Security Recommendations

Network to Connect To

  • Your wireless-capable device must be in range of the ANU-Access wireless network.
  • Wireless coverage is constantly being improved around the campus but is generally well-covered in and around libraries and lecture theatres.

How do I connect?

1 - Confirm wireless network port is active

Make sure that your wireless networking is activated on your laptop.

2 - Associate to a Wireless Access Point

Most operating systems will display a graphical window which allows you to select "ANU-Access" with your mouse.
If you are unsure, refer to your operating system's documentation for how to view and select an available wireless network to associate to, or
AskANU.

3 - Log in

ANU-Access uses web authentication.

Once associated, start a web browser and go to any web page.
Your browser should be redirected to display the wireless logon page, similar to the picture below:

ANU-Access Login Page

Enter your University ID and password (ISIS/HORUS) and select the 'Login' button.
If your login is successful, you will be redirected to your web page. If you have javascript enabled on your browser, a logout window will pop-up.

If you do not see the logon page, try turning off any web proxy settings in your browser.

What Can I Do?

Once you have logged in, you will be able to access a limited set of services depending on your university affiliation.
Details about this are linked on the Wireless Page, however the following pages may be of use:

How do I log off?

It is not strictly necessary to log out of the ANU-Access wireless network. You will be automatically logged out after a certain period of inactivity.
You may however click the log-off button, if it has popped up.
